An inspiration speech concerning Laudatio Si, the current environmental crises and the actions which need to be taken. We as people are integrally connected to the world who is suffering. We need leaders to emerge. Together we must become more aware so that we might respond as a community both locally in connection to our brothers and sisters across the world. | | 02 August 2025
Our challenge is to accompany people from the margins into a journey towards the fullness of life and love. We are meant to be in the coalface, in the messiness of it all and at the same time in fidelity to the Gospel… Like Christ in his ministry among the sick and the lost, we are called to meet God in the most unlikely people and places. We, too, must be in that frontier space. | | 02 August 2025

The documentary “Risking It All to Ensure the Future of the Next Generation” captures the extraordinary sacrifices of ocean-dwelling mothers—from humpback whales and green turtles to red crabs—who embark on some of the world’s longest and most dangerous migrations to give birth and protect their young. A female humpback whale travels 3,000 miles from Alaska to the calm waters of Hawaii, where she endures the pursuit of dozens of males before miraculously giving birth. The Baabayn NAIDOC event will take place on July 10, with an important on-site meeting scheduled for Friday, July 4 at 11am at Whalan Reserve. This meeting offers a chance to connect with other organisations, volunteers, and cultural performers, and will cover key logistics such as parking, stall locations, and event layout. While volunteers unable to attend will be kept informed, it is essential that each group have a representative if possible. No vehicles are allowed on the sports fields, so stallholders must bring a trolley for equipment transport. Attendees are encouraged to bring refillable water bottles (water stations provided) and picnic blankets for seating, as camp chairs are restricted on sports ovals. Importantly, this is a Drug and Alcohol Free event. Final stall allocations and a run sheet will be sent closer to the date. Thanks to community support, the full event will go ahead as planned. For further questions, please contact Lawrie McCane, and sincere thanks are extended by Aunty Cassandra Ebsworth and the organising team. | | 16 June 2025
NAIDOC Week began as a movement of protest against the injustice, exclusion, and dispossession faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, but over time it has grown into a national celebration of Indigenous culture, resilience, and identity. Rooted in the efforts of leaders like William Cooper and groups such as the Australian Aborigines League, it highlights both the painful history of colonisation and the ongoing struggle for justice and recognition. NAIDOC Week invites all Australians to honour the legacy of those who have fought for equality, to acknowledge the truth of our shared history, and to stand in solidarity for a more just and inclusive future. | | 05 June 2025
Australia Day, celebrated on January 26, commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 and the beginning of British colonization. However, for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, this date marks the start of invasion, loss of land, and cultural destruction. Rather than a unifying celebration, many view it as a day of mourning — often called Invasion Day or Survival Day. Critically, January 26 only became the nationally recognized date for Australia Day in 1992, making the tradition relatively recent. Tanya Hosch, social inclusion advocate and AFL executive, has said: 'When you know better, you do better... January 26 does not unite us.' | | 14 May 2025

The statement opens by acknowledging the enduring call for peace first made by Pope St John XXIII in Pacem in Terris, revisited in light of escalating global conflict, misinformation, and political unrest. It names the world’s current state—riven by war, disinformation, and post-truth culture—as both deeply troubling and in need of Gospel hope. The Bishops draw heavily on Pope Francis’ Fratelli Tutti, urging us to recognize the deep connection between truth, trust, and peace, and calling all people of goodwill to be peacemakers in a fractured world. | | 02 August 2023
